Located northwest of Thrissur, the cultural capital of Kerala, Guruvayoor is famous for its Sri Krishna Temple. Also known as the 'Dwaraka of the South', the Sri Krishna Temple is the most famous pilgrimage destination for Hindus in Kerala.

Guruvayoor is easily accessible by bus and train and you can stay at any of the hotels and restrooms in Thrissur according to your budget.

Pilgrimage destinations to visit on your travel to Guruvayoor :

Guryvayoor Temple - Devoted to Lord Krishna, and thus also known as the Sri Krishna Temple, the temple dates back to the 16th century and owes its creation and name to Guru (the preceptor of gods) and Vayu (the god of winds).
The Guryvayoor Temple is also known as 'Dwaraka of the South' because it is believed that Vasudev and Devaki at Dwaraka, Gujurat, worshiped the Sri Krishna idol. The rectangular shrine with exquisite and detailed murals on the walls is host to a number of Hindu marriages and important family ceremonies.

Though a Hindu-only temple, Guryvayoor Temple is open to all castes owing to the rebellion by the lower castes that wanted to have a right to enter the temple premises without any interference or questioning.

If you travel to Guruvayoor in the moths of April or May, you can be a spectator at the annual Pooram Festival. This festival of Kerala is an annual competition between the temples in the region where they participate in an elephant parade. The temple with the best procession of elaborately decorated elephants (maximum of eight), fireworks and colorful parasols is declared the winner.

Punnathur Kota - Another place to visit on your travel to Guruyayoor, Punnathur Kota houses the 63 elephants of the Guryvayoor Temple on its premises.

Vadakkunathan Kshetram Temple - Located in Thrissur, near Guruvayoor, this temple in Kerala is open only to Hindus. Apart from the immaculate artwork on display in the temple, there are many other temples nearby where you can go for a visit on your travel to Guruvayoor. The Thiruampady and Paramekkavu Temples are famous for the many festivals they host each year.
